Road Safety Team

Team Objectives

The Road Safety team has been established to work on the Action Plan (pdf logo) recommendations on traffic and speeding (page 8 of Action Plan), parking (page 6) and pavements (page 10, item 2).

We are currently concentrating on two main areas.

Traffic Calming

We are looking at all types of traffic calming methods, assessing how they work elsewhere and how they might apply in the village. This work includes options for the length of Plumpton - from the Plough to the Half Moon, including danger areas such as the white bridge.

The team has developed a strategy (pdf logo) to help us examine each idea carefully and systematically, taking account of a wide range of views. We are determined to ensure proposals enjoy the full support of village residents and are currently gathering essential information which includes the use of the Speed Indicator Device (SID) to gather statistics, and production of a map of accidents and near misses.

Parking

We are looking at ways to improve parking and safety near the shop and the station.

Shop: The area by the shop is part of the wider evaluation of traffic calming schemes. There is no real scope for additional parking spaces. Bim, the shop owner, will continue to do what he can to minimise parking directly outside the shop by customers or delivery vans

Station: There is a shortage of parking space in the station area; for users of the Playing Fields; for the Play Group and for commuters. The shortage is causing congestion and annoyance for residents in the area. We are working with the Playing Fields Committee, which is looking at improving their facilities at the pavilion, and talking to Southern Railways about making more Network Rail land available for parking.

Please contact team members for more information and to get involved.

Recent speed survey in Plumpton Green

From 4th to 10th May, 2010

In consultation with the Parish Council, VAP obtained funding from the Lewes District Crime Reduction Department to set up Speed boxes in Station Road. For some 8 days these measured the speed of every single vehicle passing through Plumpton Green.  No registration numbers were collected nor any drivers named, but we do now have a 100% check on the speeds of everything moving through on these 8 days.

How many vehicles pass through the village each day?
The number is between 1,100 and 1,350 every day.  So over a thousand vehicles pass through Northbound and over a thousand Southbound every day. The numbers varied little between weekdays and weekends.

How many are exceeding the speed limit?
The charts speak for themselves.  3 charts show the speeds inside the 30 m.p.h. limit and one shows the speeds at a point outside the speed limit.

The results are laid out to show the extent of speeding. It is now for Plumpton residents to give their views on the extent of the speeding that exists: now that the facts are clear, do we have a speeding problem or not? And if we do, what should be done about it?

March 2009

The Road Safety Team has been compiling a record of accidents in the village to help identify particularly dangerous spots in the village.

A map of the village (pdf logo) was on display at the Green Fair on 7th March 2009 which enabled residents to mark on it where they had recollection of accidents in the past.

This research will help the Team work out where improvements to road safety measures need to be made.

Looking at the map you will see the white bridge is identified as a particular problem site, together with the junctions with the B2116 and South Road. Most other accidents recorded by residents appear to have been in the area north of the railway.

If, on looking at the map, it jogs your memory about an accident not shown, please get in touch with the Road Safety Team on roadsafety@plumptonvap.co.uk
