Station Partnership Scheme Update

Station Library

If you haven't seen the library at the station, then do drop in any weekday morning.

There are lots of books for you; please bring a replacement (novels are preferred please) and we ask you to make a small donation to the charity box there.

The more people using this facility, the greater the variety of reading material there will be on offer.

We are also delighted to report that the donations generously given in the first six months of operation of the scheme added up to a massive £69 for St Peter & St James Hospice.

Thank you!

Station Clean-up

Station clean up team

Hopefully those people using the North bound platform will have noticed how much tidier the station is looking.

On a chilly, damp Saturday in February, eight hardy souls cleared several tons of rubble from the north bound station platforms – we guess some of it dated back to when the station was first built around 150 years ago!

What an ace team!

This should allow the wildflower seeds planted last year to grow through this summer.

A Coat of Paint

And have you noticed how much better the footbridge looks now Network Rail has given it a new lick of paint – would it have happened without the Station Partnership Scheme – who knows?

A request has been made for the far footbridge to be painted, and rumour has it that the roof of the main waiting room is to be replaced sometime in the next 12 months – now that really would show that the Station Partnership Scheme has been worthwhile!

And finally, we were represented at the recent ACoRP (Association of Community Rail Partnerships) when the efforts made by the community here in Plumpton to take pride in its station were lauded as a wonderful example of how a Community Partnership Scheme is the so-called Big Society working in practice!  Norman Baker MP and Junior Minister for Transport, was one of the speakers, and he spoke of his pride in seeing the Plumpton Scheme develop.

Thank you to all those of you that answered the question recently:

“When did Plumpton Station officially open?”

And the answer is:

Plumpton station was opened in June 1863, on the same date as Cooksbridge, and closed for freight on 8th May 1963.  The line was electrified on 7th July 1935.

The volunteers are gearing up for Summer activity – if you think that you have a few hours to spare each month to help with watering the planters and hanging baskets – please advise Paul Nicholson on 01273 891725 or email business@plumptonvap.co.uk.
